Gaep Presents is a programme of exhibitions that focuses on work by emerging artists and by established collaborators of the gallery other than the artists it represents. Inaugurated last summer, the programme builds upon ACCELERATOR – the mentoring projects for emerging artists in which Gaep has been a partner since 2022 – and on diverse collaborations with artists in the gallery’s history. This summer, Gaep Presents takes the form of a duo exhibition featuring two artists that have been part of ACCELERATOR in previous years: Vlad Albu and Roberta Curcă.
Vlad Albu’s new structures from the series Holders confront us with a tense situation. Various fragile objects are balanced precariously on other objects – caring yet imperfect systems of support. Something can go wrong at any moment. Things are literally on the edge. We become mindful of our own presence in the space, in the proximity of this delicate state of equilibrium. Will the objects continue to be held? Will we be able to hold on?
Holders embody the artist’s interest in matters related to the ontology of objects, the relational power that emerges in an assemblage, the human body’s relationship to the built environment, and the meaning of objects beyond their function. Integrating a subtly critical comment on the contemporary logic of usefulness and efficiency, the sculptural pieces re-route our attention to other imperatives: to hold and to care, the latter seen as a “political and ethical issue, even when it takes the form of a seemingly simple gesture of support” (María Puig de la Bellacasa).
At the heart of Roberta Curcă’s works in the exhibition is the question of how to picture the passage of time and make sense of one’s experience within it. The artist uses given, prefabricated, ready-made patterns and systems – such as calendars, samplers, stencils, and grids – to organize an abundance of thoughts, experiences, and emotions. The impersonal order of the original templates is neutralized by the deeply personal nature of the imagery and texts that make up the drawings. Often, these elements are devoid of any hierarchy. No one is more important than the other – a “leveling out” that can be read from an existential viewpoint: everything matters, every moment is special, every action or emotional state has significance.
If “types of order are forms of thoughts” (Mel Bochner), Roberta Curcă’s methodical organization of material into daily drawings, monthly calendars, seasonal notes, and yearly samplers amounts to a system for meditating on the time felt, lived and acted.

SHORT BIOS
VLAD ALBU (b. 1992, lives and works in Bucharest) has completed both his BA and MA studies in the Photography and Dynamic Image department at the National University of Arts in Bucharest. In his practice he often combines photography, publications, found materials, and designed structures/objects. The works revolve around exploring the intersection between public and private spaces, methods of understanding the future of objects and dwelling, with a deliberate blend of speculative elements and imaginative narratives. He has shown his work in solo exhibitions at SwitchLab, 2/3 Gallery and Galeria Posibilă in Bucharest and Aici Acolo Pop Up Gallery in Cluj-Napoca, as well as in group exhibitions at Leilei Gallery, Atelier 35, Salonul de Proiecte, Ivan Gallery and Cazul 101, all in Bucharest. Vlad participated in the mentorship project ACCELERATOR Câmpulung (2024).
ROBERTA CURCĂ (b. 1991) is a Bucharest-based artist working with drawing, photographic typologies, objects, and artist books. In her work she employs a systematic investigation into various types of structures, objects or the visuality of objects, often displayed as archives, technical drawings, notes, swatches, or other forms used to organize and display information. She often explores the dynamic between the rational and the arbitrary, two- and three-dimensional states, intent and impact, the human and the non-human. She has a BA and an MA in Drawing from the National University of Arts in Bucharest and has done research in cultural studies at CESI – Center of Excellence in Image Studies. Her work has been shown at Gaep, Sector 1, Ivan Gallery, and Atelier 35 in Bucharest; Zina Gallery and MATCA art space in Cluj-Napoca; Accademia di Romania in Rome; Kunsthalle Bega and the 2022 Beta Architecture Biennial in Timișoara. Roberta was one of the artists participating in ACCELERATOR. Mentoring and Production for Emerging Artists (2022–2023).

Gaep Presents este un program de expoziții axat pe artiști emergenți și pe colaboratori consacrați ai galeriei, alții decât artiștii pe care îi reprezintă. Lansat vara trecută, programul se bazează pe proiectele de mentorat pentru artiști emergenți ACCELERATOR, în care Gaep este partener din 2022, și pe diverse colaborări cu artiști dezvoltate de galerie în cei peste zece ani de activitate. Vara aceasta, Gaep Presents ia forma unei expoziții duo, cu doi dintre artiștii care au participat la ACCELERATOR în anii trecuți: Vlad Albu și Roberta Curcă.
Structurile noi create de Vlad Albu în seria Holders ne confruntă cu o situație tensionată. Diverse obiecte fragile sunt ținute precar de alte obiecte – sisteme de sprijin pline de grijă, dar imperfecte. În orice moment există pericolul de prăbușire. Lucrurile sunt, la propriu, pe muchie. Devenim atenți la propria noastră prezență în spațiu, în vecinătatea acestei stări delicate de echilibru. Vor continua obiectele să fie ținute? Vom fi noi capabili să rezistăm?
Holders încorporează preocupările artistului față de chestiuni legate de ontologia obiectelor, puterea relațională ce apare într-un asamblaj, relația corpului uman cu spațiul construit și semnificația obiectelor dincolo de funcția lor. Integrând un subtil comentariu critic la adresa cerințelor contemporane de utilitate și eficiență, piesele sculpturale redirecționează atenția către alte imperative: a (sus)ține și a avea grijă, cel din urmă văzut ca „o problemă politică și etică, chiar și atunci când ia forma unui gest aparent simplu de suport” (María Puig de la Bellacasa).
Esențială în lucrările Robertei Curcă din expoziție este întrebarea: cum vizualizăm trecerea timpului și înțelegem experiența noastră în această privință? Artista folosește tipare și sisteme deja existente, standard, prefabricate – precum calendare, mostrare, șabloane și matrici – pentru a organiza o abundență de gânduri, experiențe și emoții. Ordinea impersonală a modelelor originale este neutralizată de caracterul profund personal al imaginilor și textelor ce compun desenele. Adesea, aceste elemente nu sunt ierarhizate. Niciunul nu este mai important decât altul – o „nivelare” ce poate fi citită dintr-o perspectivă existențială: totul contează, fiecare moment este special, fiecare acțiune sau stare emoțională are însemnătate.
Dacă „tipurile de ordine sunt forme ale gândurilor” (Mel Bochner), organizarea metodică a materialului de către Roberta Curcă în desene zilnice, calendare lunare, note sezoniere și mostrare anuale devine un sistem de reflecție asupra timpului simțit, trăit și pus în acțiune.
Expoziția Gaep Presents: Vlad Albu și Roberta Curcă va fi deschisă până pe 31 iulie 2025.

VLAD ALBU (n. 1992, trăiește și lucrează în București) a absolvit studiile de licență și master la departamentul Foto-Video de la UNArte București. În practica sa, combină adesea fotografia cu materiale găsite, publicații și structuri/obiecte concepute de el. Lucrările gravitează în jurul problematicii intersecției dintre spațiul public și cel privat și a metodelor de înțelegere a viitorului obiectelor și locuirii, adesea cu un mix deliberat de elemente speculative și narative imaginative. A avut expoziții personale la SwitchLab, Galeria 2/3 și Galeria Posibilă în București și la Aici Acolo Pop Up Gallery în Cluj-Napoca. Printre expozițiile de grup se numără cele de la Leilei Gallery, Atelier 35, Salonul de Proiecte, Ivan Gallery și Cazul 101, toate în București. Vlad a participat la proiectul de mentorat ACCELERATOR Câmpulung (2024).
ROBERTA CURCĂ (n. 1991) este o artistă stabilită în București care lucrează cu desen, tipologii fotografice, obiecte și cărți de artist. Folosește o formă de investigație sistematică asupra unor varii tipuri de structuri și obiecte sau asupra vizualității celor din urmă, prezentate adesea ca arhive, desene tehnice, note, mostre sau alte mijloace utilizate în mod curent pentru a organiza și prezenta informația. Lucrările explorează adesea dinamica dintre rațional și arbitrar, bi și tridimensionalitate, intenție și efect, uman și non-uman. A studiat Grafică la UNArte București și a făcut cercetare în studii culturale la CESI – Centrul de Excelență în Studiul Imaginii. Lucrările ei au fost expuse la Gaep, Sector 1, Ivan Gallery și Atelier 35 în București; Zina Gallery și MATCA art space în Cluj-Napoca; Accademia di Romania în Roma; Kunsthalle Bega în Timișoara, precum și în cadrul Beta – Bienala Timișoreană de Arhitectură 2022. Roberta a fost unul dintre participanții la ACCELERATOR. Mentorat și Producție pentru Artiști Emergenți (2022–2023).
